ESA's sentinel missions in support of Earth system science
2012
Abstract The spatial and temporal characteristics of the new Sentinel missions, primarily designed to provide routine multidisciplinary observations for operational services, are also very suitable for addressing some of the challenges associated with advancing Earth System sciences. The Sentinels are ensuring long-term observational commitment and will operate a range of instruments with different spectral bands and spatial resolutions with global coverage and high revisit times. The complexity of Earth System models has been increasing gradually and most simulations of future climate and Earth system evolution are based on coupled models that include aspects of physics, bio/geo-chemistry,…
AMCAS: Advanced Methods for the Co-Design of Complex Adaptive Systems
2006
Abstract This work proposes a new approximation to design and program Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS), these systems comprise neural network, intelligent agents, genetic algorithms, support vector machines and artificial intelligence systems in general. Due to the complexity of such systems, it is necessary to build a design environment able to ease the design work, allowing reusability and easy migration to hardware and/or software. Ptolemy II is used as the base system to simulate and evaluate the designs with different Models of Computation so that an optimum decision about the hardware or software implementation platform can be taken.
Smart Sustainable Development Approach and its Implementation in Engineering Organizations
2014
This paper explores the concept of sustainability in engineering systems and proposes a smart conceptual framework for engineering organization development. Sustainability is a critically complex goal for enterprise activity and development. Sustainability in the engineering area requires a comprehensive and continue approach because, a) engineering activities are ubiquitous in society, b) of the high importance of engineering applications in the development of the companies and of the world, and c) technological support becomes imminent in a dynamic economic environment and sustained in large part by technological advances. This paper aims to provide to the engineering environment a smart …
Self-management of Information Systems
2016
The paper discusses self-management features that are intended to support the usage and maintenance processes in the information system life. Instead of a universal solutions that are evolved by many researchers in the autonomic computing field, this approach, called smart technologies, anticipates self-management features by including autonomic components into information systems directly. The approach is practically applied in several information systems, and the gained results show that the implementation of self-management features requires relatively modest resources. Thereby the approach is suitable even for smaller projects and companies.
Cyber Situational Awareness in Critical Infrastructure Protection
2020
The European Union promotes collaboration between authorities and the private sector, and the providers of the most critical services to society face security related obligations. In this paper, critical infrastructure is seen as a system of systems that can be subject to cyber-attacks and other disturbances. Situational awareness (SA) enhances preparations for and decision-making during assessed and unforeseen disruptive incidents, and promoting Cyber effective situational awareness (CSA) requires information sharing between the different interest groups. This research is constructive in nature, where innovative constructions developed as solutions for domain-specific real world problem…
Smart Terminal System of Systems’ Cyber Threat Impact Evaluation
2023
Systems of system-level thinking is required when the purpose is to develop a coherent understanding of the ecosystem where every user and system requirements are divided into specific parts. The smarter project, as a part of the Sea4value program of DIMECC, aims to develop harbor operations, including passenger and cargo transportation, in a way that port processes will improve, emissions will decrease, and overall security will enhance in smart ports. This paper describes cyber-attack impacts against the Smart terminal system of systems in the cyber realm by utilizing the MITRE ATTACK® framework to map the objectives of threat actors. The Smart Terminal system environment includes ICT, IC…
